Fieni (b. 1993) is a multi-disciplinary creative with a passion for documentary photography, art direction, and visual storytelling. With an educational background in Visual Communication Design (Sarjana Seni) and Cultural Studies (Master of Arts) from SOAS, the University of London, funded by Chevening Awards, Fieni has developed a diverse range of skills in art direction, photography, and communication work over the past decade, with a focus on the development, environment, and health sector.
Fieni's work is driven by their deep interest in cultural and global issues. Their master's papers and essays focused on Southeast Asian pop culture, literature, and films, where they analysed social representation in pop culture, space and sense of belonging, and horror as a mode of storytelling. Fieni's dissertation discusses how horror and the monstrous-feminine are used as a way of social control and as a tool of resistance in three Indonesian cultural texts.
Fieni's artistic vision is grounded in their desire to capture the essence of the world around them through a unique lens. They have a keen eye for detail and an ability to evoke emotion through their work, whether it be through their photography or art direction. Fieni's passion for visual storytelling has led them to collaborate with a variety of clients and publications in Indonesia and beyond.
Artist’s statement
“Every day I am exposed to hundreds of different individuals, each living their lives like me with routines, burning ambitions, and connections to thousands more individuals with similar complexities. These complexities that I will probably never get to explore during my lifetime.
I use documentary and street photography to explore these intricacies and as therapy for my own fear of human interaction. I seek to capture truthfulness in people: the millisecond expression change when someone is about to cry, go berserk, laugh, scratch their skin, or stare off into space. I capture images exactly as I find them with no alterations of reality, immersing myself in the subject. My work portrays the spectrum of life experiences, from birth to death, kindness, and fear, aiming to trigger the curiosities of those who view the images. Through my photography, I celebrate life and its capacity to either build or destroy us.”
